What a fantastic experience learning to surf, we have never done anything like this before but Mark was so experienced, very friendly and a brilliant teacher, that I even managed to stand up and surf it felt amazing. Mark encouraged us all the time and gave us great tips which helped us achieve something we thought we could never do. Another fantastic day's surfing with Mark at Westward Ho! Second time we've been now whilst on holiday and will definitely go again when we come back. So knowledgeable and patient with us and great with all ages and abilities. More personal touch than some of the bigger surf schools and he guided us all individually until we were all standing up and riding into the beach! Booked with Mark for my 11 year old son Henry and could not recommend highly enough! Both Mark and Red were super welcoming and really made him feel at ease. Great wetsuits and changing facilities, tonnes of charm to their set up and it's not pretentious in the slightest. It's really welcoming and cool. Fantastic explanation of techniques and safety and within his first try he was up and surfing! He LOVED it and wants to do it again. Said the instructors really made it as he felt genuinely cared about and looked after. Great job guys!

fantastic group lesson! smaller group size meant the instructors could really get good one on one time with me and showed me what to do. it felt more engaging and personal than the other big group lessons there are. the super kind and enthusiastic instructors made me feel confident and have a laugh. I have never surfed before and was learning alongside people of all ages too so would 100% would recommend no matter experience or age. they are also set up right by the ice cream van and coffee truck… what more do you need!?

Decided to book a surf lesson the same week I was planning to go on a mid-June holiday, on a whim. Picked Westward Waves Surf School based on the amazing reviews and I was not disappointed! Lovely to meet Mark and Meagan initially and then get kitted up to walk to the waves. Mark was my teacher for the day and was fantastic. Considering I have never done surfing at all (nor even worn a wetsuit before) this was completely new to me, but due to his expertise and kind encouragement I was standing on the board so quickly and even got to try a little turning by the end of the 2 hour session. I am so chuffed and had a blast! If you are thinking of trying this sport, or even improving, then this is surely the place to go!

This means I’ve tried many different surf schools in the area and Meagan and Mark are the ones I always come back to. Mark fitted us in last minute for our first surf lesson which in itself was incredible due to it being peak times! I can not praise Mark enough, after booking 5 lessons which I did over 5 weeks I was surfing. He was patient, quickly identified where I was going wrong and gave great advice on how to improve my surfing. This is a complete contrast to the short visit I had at North devon surf school, the lady who I spoke to was rude and wasn't interested in my enquiry. Although they have some great trip advisor reviews go and have a look at the one star and see how this certain person is going to be when things go wrong. In short if you want a great experience with a friendly, professional and patient coach go and see Mark, if you want to be made to feel like you are wasting someone's time go to North devon surf school. Thanks Mark I'll be back to learn more in the spring!!

Totally worth it! My boyfriend and I booked 4 days of morning lessons with Mark and we have immensely enjoyed ourselves. I am absolute newbie but with Mark's guidance I was surfing by the 3rd session! Even when there was a big group, Mark was very attentive to everyone and I am so surprised as we were everywhere but so was he! Would definitely come back and surf with Mark again. The horse box is so fantastic and fun!

Mark is a LEGEND. Totally recommend. Over the course of two lessons he got me to a point where I was catching waves, standing up and turning. Amazing (bear in mind I'm in my late 40s and haven't surfed before). The horse box set up is distinctive, quirky, practical and fun. Mark is charming, patient and an incredibly good teacher. Plus he can do cool stuff like a headstand on his board. Could not recommend more highly!
