Westward Waves Surf School is located behind the pebble ridge at the center of Westward Ho! beach. Simply enter the Northam Burrows via the Westward Ho! or Sandymere entrances and follow the roads to the center of the beach. Look for the Surf School horse box and drop in to say hello or book your surf lesson.
Despite these two North Devon locals living a stone throw form the sea, this surf lesson last Saturday was a new experience for them. Never the less both were up and riding in no time!
Here they are pre surf learning one of surfing’s most important moves the ‘SHAKA’
Today I picked up a delivery of this seasons new boards (Grizzly’s) and wetsuits (ADV wetsuits) from Tiki.
The Tiki 'Grizzly' surf boards vary in size from 7ft to 8'6ft and are fibreglass and epoxy boards wrapped with a forgiving foam outer layer, giving you the performance of a hard board with the safety of a soft board
The ADV wetsuits combines comfort and stretch in the top half, for freedom of movement, and 4 mm of neoprene on the body and legs provide the warmth you need to surf for hours.
A good day spent in the sunshine assembling all the kit.
The last few years I have been lucky enough to work the summers here in North Devon and in the winter travel to warmer waters in pursuit of waves. The last 2 years I have spent the colder months in Indonesia. Indonesia offers warm waters, consistent waves and great food in an amazing location.
This photo of me was taken on a small island call Nias off the coast of Sumatra.
Surfing is a rich sport when it comes to terms, names and expressions. Here is a small list of expressions used by surfers in the waves and at the beach.
Shaka: a Hawaiian hand gesture used to say 'hello', 'great', 'cool' and 'alright'. (as seen in the picture above)
Wipeout: an unexpected fall off a surfboard while surifng a wave (something you may be quite familier with by the end of your first surf lesson)
Bogging: what happens when a surfer's weight is too far back, and the nose of the board lifts up.
Chop: bumpy ocean and wave conditions that are rough due to strong winds and/or currents
Today we roped in the help of big sister Hazel and together we painted the changing room divider.
We decided to go for an icon Westward Ho! Sandymere scene complete with sand dunes, weather-beaten fences and threw in a few surfers for good measure, not to mention beach hut curtains to give you the privacy you need.
All in all, making your changing experience most pleasant.
