Surfing Slang and Surfer Lingo

Surfing is a rich sport when it comes to terms, names and expressions. Here is a small list of expressions used by surfers in the waves and at the beach.

Shakaa Hawaiian hand gesture used to say 'hello', 'great', 'cool' and 'alright'. (as seen in the picture above)

Wipeout: an unexpected fall off a surfboard while surifng a wave (something you may be quite familier with by the end of your first surf lesson)

Bogging: what happens when a surfer's weight is too far back, and the nose of the board lifts up.

Chop: bumpy ocean and wave conditions that are rough due to strong winds and/or currents

Foth: stoked, amped or excited. (for example; 'those waves were so sick, im frothing bra')
